Things To Check Before You Rent A Car
If you’re traveling and have just arrived at your destination, you’re likely racing to the rental car counter so you can get on the road without delay. However, before you depart, it is a good idea to become well acquainted with the rental vehicle. You don’t want to be fumbling for controls and modifying settings while driving, especially if you’re in a new vehicle on unknown roads. Make sure you have appropriate coverage before renting a car and go through this checklist before driving off the lot to ensure a safe and comfortable ride.
Check that All Lights Are Working Properly
This includes headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. If any light is out or damaged in any way, tell the agent immediately so they can fix it before you drive off the lot.
Assess the Tire Pressure
Low tire pressure can cause poor handling and lead to blowouts. Also, check that none of the tires are cracked or flat by checking them visually and with a gauge.
Look for Signs of Damage
Walk around the exterior of the car and check for dings, scratches, and other signs of wear. If you see any major damage, ask the rental agent about it before you sign your contract. Don’t be afraid to take photographs of the damage.
Familiarize Yourself with The Controls
Make sure you know where everything is located before you drive off. This includes seat adjustments as well as where to find radio controls (if applicable). If you’re driving an unfamiliar model, study these items before hitting the road.
Check the Mileage
Make sure there is sufficient fuel in the tank to get you to your destination and back. If not, inquire how much it will cost to refuel the car before you leave. Also, check with the agent if you need to refuel the car before bringing it back to the company’s lot.
Determine if You Have Insurance Coverage
If your existing credit card or auto insurance plan offers coverage for rental cars, you’re good to go. If not, you will have to purchase a policy from the rental car company. Make sure to read all the terms and conditions before you sign on the dotted line.
