Most Reliable Hatchbacks
Hatchbacks are the practical, fun-to-drive cars you’ve been waiting for.
Hatchbacks have the agility of small cars and open cargo areas, making them as easy to use as SUVs. They also offer better fuel economy than their crossover counterparts—unless you’re transporting a family of five or going off-road.
Here are the most reliable hatchbacks you can bet on if you’re looking for an efficient and fun-to-drive car.
Hyundai Veloster N
Hyundai’s three-door hatchback is as unique as it is fun to drive, thanks to its 275-hp turbo-four engine and sleek chassis. Also available with this car are rifle-action dual-clutch automatic and a satisfying manual transmission. The Veloster N has plenty of cargo and rear-seat space. It has a slew of standard features and technology, and it’s a thrill ride that almost anyone can afford.
Chevy Bolt EV
The redesigned Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchback now has more features and a lower starting price. While its futuristic sheet metal and freshly refinished cabin are the most noticeable changes, it retains a front-drive-only powertrain that provides near-instant acceleration.
Chevy estimates that the Bolt EV can travel up to 260 miles on a single charge. The Bolt EV will appeal to those looking for a more SUV-like model with more backseat space.
Kia Stinger
Kia’s big sports sedan, the Stinger, aims high and nearly succeeds in challenging Europe’s automotive elite. The Stinger hides its roomier interior, spacious cargo hold, and hatchback liftgate behind a sexy fastback roofline. The Stinger has a premium look and feel, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious enthusiasts.
Honda Civic
Honda’s popular Civic compact car gets a major facelift with new features, a more mature exterior, and an upscale interior design. A variety of four-cylinder engines are available, including a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine.
Front-wheel drive will continue to be the default setting because Honda insists all-wheel drive is not on the plan. The Civic sports new tech features like a bigger infotainment display, wireless smartphone connectivity, and improved driver assistance.
Kia Rio
The Kia Rio epitomizes low-cost, precise transportation. This subcompact offers value for the money as it is inexpensive and economical while still having a surprising amount of sophistication and features.
A sedan and a hatchback are available, but neither offers much room in the back seat or the trunk. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features, and several driver-assistance features are available.
Audi A5 Sportback
Although the Audi A5’s fastback styling is alluring, it conceals a massive trunk that is a blessing for practical buyers. Two turbocharged four-cylinder engines are available, and it is equipped with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system as standard.
The A5 Sportback combines agile handling with a comfortable ride, making it an appealing option for enthusiasts. The vehicle includes an excellent digital gauge display, numerous connectivity features, and a slew of driver-assist features.
Mazda 3
The Mazda 3 offers a premium package for the price of a typical compact car. It comes in sedan and hatchback styles, with optional all-wheel drive, a turbo engine, and plenty of upscale features.
Even with front-wheel drive and the base engine installed, the 3 has a handsome appearance and will entice enthusiastic drivers with its playful personality. Unmatched by most cars, the Mazda offers sophistication and style.
Volkswagen Golf GTI
Fears that Volkswagen would wipe out the entire Golf lineup have been abated, with the new Golf GTI ushering in a brand-new generation of the sporty hatchback. With more contemporary styling inside and out and the same legendary fantastic-to-drive behavior, the reborn Golf GTI draws in new fans and keeps rewarding devoted enthusiasts.
Tesla Model S
Customers are still drawn to this Tesla because of its superior range and available semi-autonomous driving technology. Depending on the model, the S’s estimated driving range can reach 412 miles, and its 1020-hp Plaid variant can provide supercar acceleration while accommodating four adults. Ample rear cargo space and an additional front trunk make the model S practical.
Polestar 2
The Polestar 2 is a four-door hatchback with sedan proportions and a crossover ride height. Although it has an unusual design, the hatchback body and lower price make it more practical and affordable. The Polestar 2 comes with one or two electric motors.
The car with a single motor is front-wheel drive and has a 270-mile driving range. The dual-motor Polestar 2 has a shorter range but compensates with all-wheel drive and significantly more power for faster acceleration.
